We have two part time opportunities for you to join our dynamic Library Services team.

The Children & Youth Service Librarian position is to provide library service and programming for children, youth and their families and those who work with children, youth and families.  Constant contact and collaboration with children and youth, (typically ages 0 to15 years) including those with diverse backgrounds and abilities and their families / care giver’s.

We are looking for a team member that is enthusiastic and has strong experience in delivering programs, an understanding of different levels of learning and the capacity to interact and relate to children and youth from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. This is an exciting opportunity for a progressive librarian who is passionate about continuous improvement and developing the library into a world class resource centre.

This role in particular will require you to:

  • Develop and deliver public programming and services for children and youth, taking a collaborative approach with families, carer’s, youth and other service providers
  • Provide exceptional customer service to all library visitors
  • Curate and manage relevant physical and digital collections
  • Undertake outreach work to strengthen services and to promote Library services.


We are recruiting for this position to be located at multiple sites.  However, positions within Library Services are not fixed at the one location and may be required from time to time to relocate dependant on business needs.

You can bring… (Selection criteria)

  • Ability to demonstrate and display City of Melbourne Values – accountability, integrity, courage, respect for self and others, and striving for excellence
  • Eligibility for professional (librarian) membership of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) or equivalent qualifications in early literacy focused area
  • Experience in the provision of community and/or library related programs, preferably in the area of  services for Children and Youth Librarian
  • Ability to provide high level, engaging and interactive presentations and to a diverse audience
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with high level literacy, numeracy, technology and presentation skills
  • Ability to develop, deliver and manage high quality customer service in a library or similar work environment
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations, resolve problems and diffuse potential conflict
  • Demonstrated ability to provide services and programs to all sections of the community, including people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds and all abilities.
