The Wagga Wagga City Library is entering into an exciting period where we are expanding and increasing our services to the community. These services will be delivered at both the Civic Centre and as part of a new agile library service to the suburban neighbourhoods and village communities across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area.

As a result, we seek an experienced individual to co-ordinate the Language Café program to ensure quality customer service to Library clients and the delivery of library programs to identified client groups.

Language is often a barrier for people from different backgrounds, but the Language Café program brings the community closer together through the power of conversation. Three times a week, community volunteers help participants practice their English through conversation in Council’s Community Learning Space. The Wagga Wagga community has 99 language groups and through the Language Café we are assisting everyone from new arrivals to Australia to skilled migrants.

What we will offer you:

  • Permanent part-time position to be worked fourteen (14) hours per week each Tuesday and Friday.
  • Remuneration of $909.22 gpf + superannuation based on part-time hours of work arrangements.
  • Commencing from Monday, 16 May 2022. 

Your new role:
In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Co-ordinating the Language Café program to ensure the sessions run smoothly;
  • Providing a high-level reader advisory service to community members on a wide range of both Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and English as a Second Language (ESL) reading material across all age groups;
  • Networking and partnering with related Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) service providers to promote learning, inclusiveness and cultural celebration;
  • Recruit and train new volunteers for Language Café; and
  • Assist in undertaking circulation library desk duties such as processing borrowings and returns, library memberships and cash handling and general operational activities within the library as required.

What you will need to succeed:
The successful applicant will have:

  • Library based experience with an emphasis on working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities;
  • Knowledge of a wide range of English as a Second Language (ESL) and Culturally Linguistically Diverse (CALD) learning materials;
  • Experience in developing partnerships with related Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) service providers to promote learning, inclusiveness and cultural celebration; and
  • Strong ability to provide computer assistance to ESL customers; and
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Your new role:

  • Provide a high-level reader advisory service to customers on a wide range of literary genres, current authors and age-related reading materials across both physical and elibrary collections.

  • Maintain Library shelves and re-shelve returned items.
  • Undertake general operational activities within the library including stock maintenance and other general administrative tasks.

  • Great communication skills and highly organised.

  • Strong commitment to and proven experience in the coordination and supervision of the delivery of a quality customer focused library service.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, developing, promoting library services that reflect and enhance the cultural, informational, recreational and educational needs of a diverse community.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate change and influence senior decision-makers to implement change strategies.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including effective negotiation, consultation and consensus building.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic policy development and service planning, evaluation and improvement
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and workflows to tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated financial management skills and experience managing an operational budget.
  • Demonstrated team leadership and team building skills. Strong staff development skills including motivating, mentoring, performance managing and coaching staff.
  • Must be fully vaccinated (minimum 2 doses) with an approved COVID-19 vaccine and provide Council with evidence of vaccination, or an accepted certified medical contraindication. Council reserves the right to confirm the validity of contraindications in accordance with NSW Health guidelines, and to direct a Worker to undertake an independent medical examination in relation to the issuance of a medical contraindication certificate.

Burwood Council is going through an exciting period of change designed to deliver re-imagined services and better meet the needs of Burwood’s growing and changing community.

Reporting to the Manager Library and Community Hub, the Team Leader Creative Experience is a new permanent role based at the Burwood Library and Community Hub – an energetic and inspiring place located in the strategic centre of Burwood.  

About the role

In this role you will lead the activation of the Community Hub with a broad range of arts, lifelong learning, cultural, literacy, digital and creative programs and guide the day-to-day work of the library creative experience team.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Overseeing the day-to-day activities of the creative experience team to ensure organisational, management and legislative requirements are met.
  • Supporting the development, implementation and review of Council’s Library Strategic Plan and Cultural Plan, including regularly reporting on agreed actions, outcomes and progress.
  • Strengthening and building organisation culture and capability by leading and supporting a small team of multidisciplinary staff.
  • Supporting the implementation of change management initiatives to improve creative experiences and programming within the Community Hub.
  • Undertaking community engagement processes to support the provision of age specific and culturally appropriate creative programs and services.
  • Facilitating partnership projects with internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of new initiatives, programs and services in the Community Hub.
  • Providing input into the Library and Community Hub’s marketing and promotions plan.
  • Seeking funding opportunities to enhance creative experiences and access to innovative programming for the local community.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have experience in developing and implementing innovative programming in one or more of the specialised areas of creative technologies, space activation, studio production, and/or multi-arts forms for diverse audiences. General knowledge of STEAM resources and tools to support learning or a willingness to cultivate such knowledge is also required.

You will bring exceptional communication, partnership development and community engagement skills to inform creative program development as well as demonstrated experience in the marketing and promotion of creative programming to drive visitation.

The successful candidate must have a degree in library information, education, cultural services, digital media or a related discipline with contemporary experience in a similar role.

Previous experience in a public library setting is also desirable as the role will participate in the Library and Community Hub Customer Care Roster, including some evening and weekend work.

A Working with Children Check is also required for this role.
